Don’t launch to an empty room

1. The Cold Launch
Imagine it's 9 AM on launch day. Your demo video is live, the hype feels real, but by evening? You only have four likes and two of them are from your own team. That is a cold launch: the announcement went out to a room nobody had filled.
Founders like Gabriel Weinberg (Founder of DuckDuckGo) and Marc Andreessen (co-founder of Netscape and Andreessen Horowitz) argue that building the product is only half the work. The other half is finding customers from day one. Companies that fail usually do so because they thought hard about the product and about nothing else.
Dropbox and Tesla proved this by securing massive interest long before their products were ready; Dropbox’s waitlist grew to 75,000 people in just 10 days, while Tesla secured 325,000 reservations for the Model 3 in its first week. By releasing demos and taking reservations years before production, they built audiences that were ready to show up on launch day.
A launch spends an audience that somebody already built. You need to start collecting yours in week one, before you have anything to show.
If you have an idea, two teammates and nothing built yet, your version of this fits on one page. Write one sentence explaining what you are making and who it is for. Put an email box under it. Then share that page where people already complain about the problem you are solving: a GroupMe, a Discord, a subreddit, the group chat for the class where it keeps coming up. For B2B audiences, focus on professional environments rather than community chats. Seek out niche industry Slack/Discord communities, professional LinkedIn groups, or relevant professional subreddits. Prioritize direct, value-first outreach to decision-makers on LinkedIn rather than broad broadcasting, and target industry-specific events or webinars where your ICP gathers.
Then email that list once a week while you build. Tell them what you tried, tell them what broke, and ask them one real question. The people who write back are the people who show up on launch day, and their answers give you the customer research you needed anyway.
The launch post is the last five minutes of a much longer process. Start the list this week, while you have nothing to show and a bad email costs you nothing.
To ensure your own project doesn’t launch into silence, take the first step this week: build a simple landing page. All it needs is one sentence describing your solution and an email capture box. By sharing this in communities where the problem is already being discussed and sending weekly updates even to a list of just six people. So you can start the vital work of filling the room before you ever open the doors.
