Talk About Your Idea Before You Are Ready - Essay
Every founder hears "go talk to people about your idea." Almost nobody does it while the idea is still messy, which is exactly when they should.
Here's why we dodge it.
In your head, the idea is flawless. Every piece clicks. It's beautiful.
Then you're at a party and someone asks what you're building. Your perfect two-sentence pitch has become a five-minute pitch. You've said "basically" four times, and that’s when hit you with:
"Wait, doesn't an app already do that?"
And you've got nothing. The idea could be great. That question just never came up while it was you and your Notes app at 2am.
I call this the empty room problem. Your idea sounds brilliant in an empty room because there's nobody in there to poke a hole in it. Say it out loud to a real person and the gaps in the idea reveal themselves instantly.
Two rules for doing this the right way:
Remember that feedback isn't a vote. Five conflicting opinions doesn’t mean accommodate five different viewpoints. It means look for what pain points they all highlight. Don't ask if people "like" it. They'll say yes to be nice. Ask what their current approach to the problem you solve is. What they answer to this specific question beats what they say to be polite every time. This is how you discover whether your solution is in fact a worthwhile solution.
And if you're worried someone will steal it: nobody is quitting their job to out-build you because you described a pain point at a coffee shop.
So this week, find your empty room and put someone in it.
Talk about it before you're ready.

YOUR NEXT STEP
This week, don't polish the idea alone. Explain it to three people:
someone who has lived the problem
someone who knows the industry
someone who knows nothing about it
Remember: Whether they like it doesn’t matter. Ask what they think the product does, how they deal with the problem now, and where your explanation lost them. Then write down what you heard.
You don't need to overhaul everything after three conversations. Change one assumption, one sentence, or one feature based on what you learned.
You're doing this to find where your idea falls short so you can fix it before you spend months building around it.
Talk about it before you're ready.
