1. Test the Assumption That Can Kill It
You have probably spent more time deciding what to build than finding out whether anyone needs it. The real risk is not shipping something imperfect. It is learning that the problem is not painful enough, your solution is not useful, and/or nobody will pay. This week's goal is simple: identify the assumption that could kill your idea, then run the smallest test that gives you a real answer. Until someone takes an action, signs up, books a call, tries the service, puts down a deposit, or pays, you are still guessing. A first version is not proof that you are a good builder. It is a tool for learning what to build next.
Every early test should answer one question: do people care enough to act? A landing page tests whether people will sign up. A rough demo shows where they get confused and what they actually want. The goal is not a polished product. It is evidence for what to build next.
Consumer app: can five people use it twice without reminders?
B2B software: will three target customers take a call, show you their workflow, and agree to try a manual pilot?
Service business: will someone book and pay for the service before you build a polished site?
Marketplace: can you get one side of the market to commit before you recruit the other?
Airbnb began with a simple test: would anyone pay to sleep on an air mattress during a crowded design conference? They did not need a global marketplace, reviews, or host protections to answer it.
That question was small enough to test. However, many founders do the opposite by asking about the end-result: “What will the perfect product look like when thousands of people use it?”
That question is too broad; it encourages planning rather than learning. Ask a smaller question instead: “What is the fastest version of this idea that could prove me wrong?”
The goal of the first version is not to impress people; it's to create proof that you are solving a real pain point. You do not need to launch something embarrassing on purpose, however. You should still care about the people using it, make it understandable, and avoid shipping something unreliable or unsafe.
Before you build another feature this week, write down: 'For this business to work, ___ must be true.' Then ask: 'What is the cheapest test that could show me I'm wrong?' Run that test first.
